Meet 2024 Apprentice, Benji Lord

We are so excited to introduce to you someone you may have seen around Encore these last few months… Meet the newest member of the apprenticeship team, Benji Lord!

Tell us about yourself!

I was born and raised in Loudoun County Virginia. I have 2 older brothers and a younger sister. Theater has always been a part of my life. As a child I loved to create characters and act them out with my friends. My best friend and I had personas where we were doctors, and aliens from another planet. My grandparents would often take me to go see shows at the Kennedy Center. I started doing theater myself in 8th grade. My first role was The Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland Jr. I loved it so much I decided to pursue it when I went to college. I just recently graduated from George Mason University with a degree in Theatre.

What made your decision to apply for the Encore apprenticeship?

I wanted to immerse myself in theater. I have been teaching theater to young people since I was in high school. An apprenticeship allows me to gain more experience in what I love doing. I’m able to put what I learned in college to use so I don’t forget everything immediately. I found out about the opportunity through my friend Shannon who is also an arts apprentice here.

What Encore programs and projects have you worked on so far?

I have had the joy of working on the Nemo Ball, Flip the Script at Dorthy Hamm, and our different residency shows.

What shows, classes, or skills are you looking forward to learning during your time at Encore?

I look forward to getting to work on the Sound of Music in anyway that I can. I love that show and its been one of my favorites since I was 6.

Can you describe your favorite theater/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?

During college I had a really crazy quick change where I had to quickly get my makeup put on and completely change my appearance in 15 mins.

What’s your favorite play or musical as an audience member?

Les Miserables, Sound Of Music

Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?

I think the performing arts allow young people to make important connections with other young people. The skills you learn from the performing arts are able to translate easily into other aspects of life.

What is your dream character role or dream production to work on and why?

I would love to play Edna Turnblad in a professional production of Hairspray.

What theme day should Encore have at the office?

Monochrome outfit day!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I hope to continue my job in the arts in many different ways as I continue to grow.

We’re so glad to have Benji on the team and to teach our programs! Be sure to follow us on social for more behind the scenes with our apprentice team!

Meet our Marketing & Development Coordinator: Josie Ziemski

The Front Row Blog

From content creation to leading the front of house crew, our 2023 Arts Management intern made a lasting impression. We’re so excited to reintroduce you to Josie Ziemski, our new Marketing and Development Coordinator!

We’re so glad to have you on our marketing and development departments! What made you want to return to Encore?
When I first started my internship, I was struck by how welcoming everyone in the Encore community was, whether that was the admin staff, the teaching artists, or the young actors and actresses! I was so excited to be able to take on a full-time role to continue working with such amazing people while doing work I truly enjoy!

Looking back at your internship, what did you enjoy the most?

Over the summer, I enjoyed being involved in the summer camps – I was able to go and photograph many of the shows as well as creating the digital programs for the final performances! I loved being able to see the students growing their theatre skills- all while having a fun summer with Encore!

What project have you found the most exciting so far this season?

I find working on the programs for our 2023/2024 season shows to be so exciting. Though it is a lot of work, seeing the actors and actresses so excited to see the final program and excitedly flip through the pages on opening night makes me feel so happy.

What are you looking forward to this 2023/2024 season?

This season, I am so excited to work with the front of house crews for each of the shows!

What have you learned about yourself on the Encore team?

I have only worked at Encore full-time for a little more than 3 months, but I have already learned so much about myself! I am definitely still learning a lot, but I learned and reflected about my design abilities as well as realize I thrive in fast-paced environments (even though sometimes I need a minute to catch my breath!)

Anything else you’d like to share?

I am so excited to continue with Encore and cannot wait to see what the future has in store!

Catch Josie at the box office and be sure to give a great Encore hello!

Meet 2023/2024 Arts Apprentice (Taylor Rawlings)

If you enjoyed the music direction in our 2023 summer show Freaky Friday as much as we did, you’ll gonna love the newest member of the Encore team! Meet Taylor Rawlings and her latest Encore endeavor as our 2023/2024 Arts Apprentice! Learn about her background in voice and her newest Encore journey (a true “TV”, Taylor’s Version!)

Tell us about yourself!

I’m from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. I went to Belmont University in Nashville, TN for my Bachelor’s in Voice Performance, and Temple University in Philadelphia, PA for my Master’s in Voice Performance.

What made your decision to apply for the Encore apprenticeship?

I applied to the Encore apprenticeship to learn the ins and outs of theater, and to better prepare myself for working in the arts.

Have you worked or participated with Encore before your apprenticeship and please tell us all about it!

Over the summer of 2023, I worked with Encore’s summer camp programs as well as being involved as the Music Director for Encore’s summer production of Freaky Friday.

What shows, classes, or skills are you looking forward to learning during your time at Encore?

I’m most excited to work on behind the scenes aspects of shows – including props, lighting, and sound – as well as helping to direct shows. I’m also very interested in the graphic design aspect of the marketing for Encore’s shows and events.

Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?

My first show during my undergrad was an opera called Die Fledermaus, which was my first time being involved with an opera. It really solidified my love for the art of opera and theater, with the cast and crew being so lovely and the show itself being so much fun.

What’s your favorite play or musical as an audience member?

My favorite musical is the recent-ish musical adaptation of Beetlejuice. I found this show during 2020 quarantine and had the honor of seeing the almost all original cast on Broadway when he reopened in 2022.

Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?

Performing arts help build a community for young people as well as self-confidence. Being on a stage can be scary, but having a solid circle of good people surrounding you on and offstage can help greatly.

What is your dream character role or dream production to work on and why?

Though it is a relatively small role, the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd is adream of mine. I’ve always loved the more macabre musicals, and her character just seems so much fun to play. I’ve also simply loved her one song she sings – Green Finch and Linnet Bird – for years. There’s also the role of Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. Suddenly Seymour is obviously a classic.

What theme day should Encore have at the office?

Since I can’t choose just one, here would be my top two picks – either Star Wars or a fantasy type theme. Star Wars I suggest just because there’s so many fun things we could do, and fantasy because its pretty open for interpretation.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I’m super excited working as an apprentice!

We are just as excited to have Taylor on the Encore team!

Meet 2023/2024 Arts Apprentice (Shannon Rodgers Version)

The Front Row Blog

We love seeing Encore alumni return in various roles, so we’re more than excited to introduce to our 2023/2024 Arts Apprentice Shannon Rodgers! Formally a duchess in a memorable 2015 Encore production, learn about this unique Encore journey (Shannon’s version).

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Shannon! I’m from Falls Church, Virginia. I studied Theater Performance at George Mason University’s School of Theater. (Go Mason Players!)

What made your decision to apply for the Encore apprenticeship?

I always think fondly of my time as a part of Encore when I was in Middle School. I was always so excited to see my friends perform in Encore’s productions, so much so that I decided to audition myself when I was 14. I was a part of the 2015 cast of Alice in Wonderland. I remember how I was so impressed that I could make friends with so many kids from so many different schools. Community theaters like Encore shaped my childhood development and I’m passionate about what children’s theater does for young people’s approach to the real world.

I remember it was my first experience with a wig and crazy stage makeup. I played the Duchess. She doesn’t exist in the Disney movie, but it was a blast to have such a quirky role that I’d never seen anything about before. I also made a lot of friends through that cast experience that I stuck with for a while after the show was over.

What shows, classes, or skills are you looking forward to learning during your time at Encore?

I’m so excited to have involvement with the production side of children’s theater. I’ve always loved the process of building a show and I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with the kids at Encore through that journey. I’m also looking forward to seeing kids grow in their acting and movement skills.

Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?

When I was in high school I did a production of Urinetown directed by Shawn Northrip. This show really grew my love for ensemble work. I was a part of the ‘poor ensemble’ as ‘Becky Two Shoes.’ It was just so fun to build background stories and funny improved bits throughout the show. I made some super solid friendships through that cast experience as well. It was also this musical that sparked my interest in growing my dance skills. I had never been a dancer before, but almost every single song I was in, was a huge dance number.  I had the best time putting in the time and effort to nail those routines. I think musical ensembles are an amazing growing opportunity, and an unforgettable experience.

What’s your favorite play or musical as an audience member?

This is such a hard question because every show has a different and specific impact. If I had to choose right now I would say ‘John Proctor is the Villain’ by Kimberly Belflower. I had worked a lot on that play in college; acting/studying the characters, directing scenes, and mock-designing it. In 2022, Studio Theater produced its world premiere and I just fell in love with the characters even more. It’s such an important piece that puts a real world twist on the classic Crucible. I laughed, and cried, and felt inspired. It was staged in-the-round as well, which adds so much life to the way the audience perceives the characters. Anyway, I just love that show and how Studio presented it.

Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?

As a young person who prided herself on her involvement in the arts, I was not as confident as you would think. I was definitely a shy kid. I would act at community theaters and avoid acting in school because I was scared or insecure. By the time I reached high school I had grown so much through children’s theater programs that I felt super capable in my acting abilities. I had a great high school theater life which inspired me to pursue it professionally. Children’s theater is not only important for those shy kids that also love to act, but it’s very important for kids’ self expression and empathy. It does wonders for childhood development no matter what field they grow up to pursue. Funnily enough, It also just helps with those dreaded presentation projects every class for the rest of your life will make you do. Do theater!

What is your dream character role or dream production to work on and why?

When I was 13 I was in a production of Midsummer Night’s Dream and I played Bottom. I was really good at playing absurd and funny characters, you could say. But now as a 22 year old, I would love a shot at playing Hermia or Helena. I love Midsummer Night’s Dream.

What theme day should Encore have at the office?

Definitely a Barbie day. Pink or Mojo Dojo Casa House. (I loved the movie) Everyone must address each other as “Hey Barbie,” “Hey Ken,” or “Hey Alan!”

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

While I’m excited to help the kids grow this year, I’m also very grateful for the growth that Encore will guide me with. I know they helped me grow when I was 14, I’m sure they’ll still help me grow as a 22 year old.

We’re so glad to have Shannon on the admin team this year!

Meet our 2023 Programming Assistant, Brian Hernandez

We’re so glad to add a 2023 member in our Encore team this fall. If you were with us during the summers of 2019 and 2020, you’ll see someone familiar! Returning to Encore as a Programming Assistant, meet (again!) Brian Hernandez!

Tell us about yourself!

I’m originally from the Falls Church area but my roots are in El Salvador. I attended James Madison University where I got my Bachelor of Science in Studio Art/Art Education and a minor in Music Industry. I did my student teaching at Smithland ES in Harrisonburg, VA and at Broadway HS in Broadway, VA. Here I taught art, and it was an incredible experience with some valuable memories. I’ve had the wonderful experience of being able to be a part of the Disney College Program out in Anaheim, California! In my free time, I enjoy exploring nature, racking up heavy weights when lifting, and catching up on my favorite animes (current shows I’m watching are Jujutsu Kaisen and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.)

What is your role here at Encore this fall and what will you be working on?

I am the Programming Assistant here at Encore! From what it looks like, I’ll be working on a variety of tasks! I’ll be helping and assisting Madaline with day-to-day operations for classes, holiday mini-camps, outreach programs, and if assigned, be lead teacher. There’s also going to be some office operations such as taking notes, organizing files, creating documents as needed, etc… We recently went over how to take orders for tickets or to register people into our system so I know that will be part of the day-to-day operations as needed. I am working closely with Cleo for the Charles Barret School Play and I am really stoked for the experience.

You’ve no stranger to the Encore team, please tell us all about what you’ve done previously with Encore.

My first experience with Encore was as an Arts Management intern back in the summer of 2019! Feels like so long ago but there were some great fantastic memories! Some include making programs for the camps, designing the shirts for “Into the Woods” and “Mary Poppins”, and running Front of House for “Newsies”! Fast forward to summer of 2020 and here I was back with Encore but this time as a choreographer for “Once Upon a Mattress!” Albeit everything about that experience was virtual, it was a unique experience to be able to create something, tweak it to be virtual, and have a completed production by the end of it all!

Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?

My first theatre show that I was in was “The Addams Family” musical and that was my senior year of high school. Besides it being my first production, what made it memorable was that I felt it helped me create some wonderful bonds with friends, and it made me realize that taking creative risks is something that is a part of life.  I didn’t think that being cast as a ghost (specifically, a Spanish conquistador), would be part of my character development, but it’s a memory I look back on and am very thankful for to this day.

What shows, classes, or programs are you looking forward to this year at Encore?

Since it’s heading into fall, I’m excited to see how the “Casper the Friendly Ghost” mini-camp will go as well as the “Creepy, Kooky, & All Together Ooky” class!

What’s your favorite play or musical as an audience member?

My favorite musical in life is, and forever will be, “Moulin Rouge”. I have not had the opportunity to see it in person, but I know that if I did, it would be a euphoric experience.

Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?

The performing arts are important for young people because it allows them to experience the world in their own ways. As an educator, I told my students, “define normal.” It is so disheartening when young people feel like they can’t express themselves or that their experiences get diminished because “it’s not normal” or that it will be perceived as weird to their peers. The performing arts acts as a backbone for support for young people to surpass their creative limits, to collaborate with other creative risk-takers, and its value on how it can help someone throughout their life is immeasurable.

What is your dream character role or dream production to work on and why?

Going back to Moulin Rouge, I would love to be involved in a production like that in any way possible.

What theme day should Encore have at the office?

I think it would be fun to do a nostalgic “favorite cartoons growing up” kind of day. We wouldn’t have to dress up like the characters, but it would be great to see coordinated outfits and guess which show everyone is. I already have some outfit ideas for myself for shows like, “Dragon tales”, “Maggie and the Ferocious Beast”, and “Invader Zim” to name a few.

In his interview, Brian also wanted to share another Encore “core memory.”

This is an oddly specific memory but during my time back in 2019, McDonald’s had toys for “Toy Story 4” and those toys were stand-alone but if you collected all of them, they combined together to create the RV from the movie! I think we got up to like 5 out of 9 pieces or something but it was a fun little bonding moment with the staff in trying to see updates on how it was going. Wanted to share that I really appreciate that memory and all of y’all.

We’re ecstatic to see Brian return and share his experiences in this latest Encore role!

Encore in the Community: 3 Special Moments this 2023 Summer

This summer has been a special one, as we’ve been fortunate to share the magic of theatre to the greater community. Here are 3 special moments that made it a magical experience for all!

#1 – First Time Audience Members
On July 27, over 100 students were in the audience for two performances of Circulo/Circle at Theatre on the Run in South Arlington. The students attended as part of Arlington Housing Corporation’s (AHC) resident services. Madaline Langston, Director of Programming expressed how some of the young audience members had not attended a live theatrical performance before.

“I witnessed the magic of theater on their faces as they walked into the house and became audience members for the first time. They were full of amazement and wonder of what was going to happen,”

Madaline Langston

We are always honored and excited to be a part of a child’s first theatrical experience!

#2 – Learning through Theatre
Both original productions, A Sidewalk Stoll and Circulo/Circle take our audience on a special journey while recognizing and exploring emotions. Whether it’s playing in a puddle, or getting ready to go to the circus, our performances take a moment to recognize feelings of happiness, sadness, frustration and even excitement with a literal spotlight. In Circulo/Circle, our bilingual performance allows us to express these emotions in both Spanish and English.

In our performance at the Lubber Run Amphitheater Free Concert Series, the young patrons responded to the actors’ antics with laughter and glee. There was a moment in the show where they leaped to their feet wanting to participate. “Feliz” was called out several times in the audience! While some audience members were learning a new language, others were learning to recognize emotions!

#3 – The Joy of Theatre

In June, Encore performed A Sidewalk Stroll at the Fairlington community cookout organized by the Alexandria Police Department in partnership with various local organizations. There was great fellowship at the event! We concluded our performance with a Question and Answer session where families and children had a chance to ask questions for our actors and play with the props and set. The joy on their faces when they played with the actors was for sure a core memory!

Meet Josie Ziemski, 2023 Arts Management Intern

We’re so excited to have Josie on the administrative team this summer as our 2023 Arts Management Intern! Learn about her passion for theatre and how the performing arts gave her confidence!

Tell us about yourself!
My name is Josie Ziemski. I am from Potomac, Maryland and I recently graduated from The Catholic University of America where I majored in Digital Arts and minored in Digital Storytelling and Video Production.

Why did you apply for the Encore arts management internship?
I have always absolutely loved theater, in college I was a part of our student run theatre company as a set designer as well as a graphic designer in the marketing department. When I was looking for opportunities after college I was interested in the theatre space while still using my background in arts/marketing. When I found the listing for the arts management internship, it sounded like a perfect fit!

What are you looking forward to learning during your time at Encore?
I am looking forward to working more with the students working front of house and box office as well as getting very hands-on and professional experience creating marketing materials in a theater setting!

Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?
Last winter I was asked by a masters student at Catholic University to create illustrations to be projected as backdrops during his opera thesis as well as doing the set design and marketing materials. It was such an amazing opportunity to be able to work with him and help a composer/playwright bring his vision to light.

What’s your favorite play or musical as an audience member?
One of the first musicals I remember seeing, and remains my favorite, was The Lion King on Broadway and it was probably the best introduction to the theater world I could have possibly had.

Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?
Performing arts gives young people the opportunity to express themselves in such a unique way – it also allows young people to break out of their shell and gain confidence (as it did for me!).

What is your dream character role or dream production to work on and why?
I would love to do set design and/or the marketing for Little Women (although Anything Goes is a close second!). The story and aesthetic itself are beautiful and the opportunity to work on it would be a dream come true!

What theme day should Encore have at the office?
Dressing up as the play/musical character you relate to the most, I would love to see everyone’s choices and I think we would all get to know each other a lot more!

We can’t to see all the amazing things you’ll do with us this summer!
